I thought about Radley on my backst steps teaching a puppy to sit for a piece of cheese. I thought about the wet vac and the hose and family doesn’t send family a bill.

He had done something unforgivable in my basement. And then for the better part of an hour, he had sat alone in a dark parking lot trying to undo it.

It didn’t make him innocent.

It made him the only one of the three who had tried to stop it.

My son wasn’t moved at all.

“That idiot,” Jeffrey said. “That stupid, stupid idiot.”

Sheriff Gorsline turned to Robin.

“And that’s why the service was cancelled, isn’t it? So the paperwork would say she skipped her own safety check.”

Robin didn’t answer. She didn’t need to.

The sheriff stood up.

“Jeffrey Meerson. Robin Meerson. You’re both under arrest for attempted murder and unlawful imprisonment.”

Lieutenant Wyoff stepped behind my son.

Phân cảnh 10: Aftermath and resolution

Deputy Jorgensson stepped behind my daughter-in-law. The handcuffs closed with a small metallic sound.

It was almost exactly the sound that Bolt had made at 7:24, and I don’t think anyone in that room noticed it but me.

When the deputy searched Robin’s handbag, she lifted out my phone. It was switched off. She sealed it in a plastic bag and wrote on the label.

Jeffrey twisted around as Wyoff walked him toward the door.

“Mom, mom, tell them I’m your son.”

I stood up then for the first time all night. I didn’t step toward him. I just stood with my coat around my shoulders so that he’d have to look at me level.

“I know who you are, Jeffrey.”

I spoke quietly.

“I raised you to check every exit in a room.”

“Mom—”

“Every room needs two ways out. You locked one. You never thought to ask about the other.”

He opened his mouth. Nothing came out of it.

Wickoff took him out onto the porch.

Robin went more slowly. At the front door, she stopped and turned and found my face across the room.

Her lips parted, and I saw the shape of the word before she said it. The same soft sound that had come through my bedroom door every evening for 8 months.

“Mom, please. Sweet—”

“Good night, Robin,” I said.

The deputy guided her out.

The door closed behind them.

Through the window, I watched two sets of red tail lights pull out from behind my barn and turn onto the county road toward Utley.

Then the house was quiet and cold and mine.

I didn’t sleep in my house that night. Sheriff Gorsline drove me down the road to the prudies herself.

Sue made up the bed in her guest room, and I lay under her quilt until the window went gray, listening to Lester snore through the wall.

It was the most comforting sound I’ve ever heard.

At 6:10 the next morning, Saturday, October 18th, deputies arrested Radley at his apartment. Lieutenant Wyoff called me at noon.

Radley had waved his right to a lawyer for the first hour and told them everything.

Becca küldte a vezető szerelőjüket.

A tűzoltóparancsnok már elvitte a pincémből, amit kellett.

Két héttel később a Farnum új kazánt szereltetett be.

A holmijuk egy utley-i raktárba került.
